Hygiene – More Than Just Smelling Nice
Let’s be honest — puberty comes with a lot of changes, and not all of them are pleasant. Hormones are raging, your body is growing fast, and suddenly, the things that used to work (like skipping showers or sharing lip gloss) just don’t cut it anymore.
But hygiene isn’t just about avoiding body odor — it’s about taking care of your whole self: your skin, hormones, confidence, and long-term health.
Why Good Hygiene Matters
During your teenage years, your oil glands go into overdrive thanks to hormonal changes. That means:
- More sweat
- More acne
- More body odor
Good hygiene helps manage all of this — while also building habits that last a lifetime.
The Hygiene Checklist Every Teen Should Know
1. Daily Showering
Aim to shower once a day — especially after sports or sweating. Use gentle soaps, and focus on underarms, feet, groin area, and behind the ears. Don’t over-scrub — your skin still needs its natural oils!
2. Face Care
Teen skin can be sensitive and prone to breakouts. Wash your face twice a day with a mild cleanser. Don’t pop pimples — it can cause scars and spread bacteria.
Functional tip: Diet, gut health, and hormones also impact skin! Keep sugar low and eat more fruits, veggies, and water-rich foods.
3. Oral Hygiene
Brush your teeth twice daily and floss once. Bad breath often comes from bacteria buildup, not just what you eat. Replace your toothbrush every 3 months.
4. Deodorant and Body Odor
Once puberty hits, sweat smells different. Use a natural deodorant (not antiperspirant) that lets your body detox while keeping odor in check.
5. Hair Care
Depending on your hair type, wash 2–3 times a week or as needed. Use sulfate-free shampoos and avoid excessive heat or harsh styling products.
6. Menstrual Hygiene for Girls
Change sanitary pads or tampons every 3–4 hours. Keep a period kit with wipes, extra underwear, and a discreet pouch. Wash hands before and after changing.
Bonus tip: Track your cycle. Apps can help you stay prepared and understand your body’s rhythm.
7. Clothing & Laundry
Wear clean underwear and socks daily. Change out of sweaty clothes quickly. Bacteria love damp fabric!
8. Hands & Nails
Wash hands often — especially before eating and after the bathroom. Keep nails trimmed and clean to avoid buildup of dirt and germs.
Hygiene Builds Confidence
Smelling fresh, having clear skin, and feeling clean boosts your self-esteem. It’s not about perfection — it’s about self-respect and feeling your best from the inside out.
“When you care for your body, your body will care for you.”
Hygiene isn’t a chore — it’s an act of self-love.
And guess what? It’s also the first step in taking control of your health. If you’re confused about what products to use, how your diet affects your skin, or why your hormones feel like they’re out of control, I’m here to help.
